Ms. Susan Lynn Merrill

October 30, 1962 — July 13, 2024

Ms. Susan Lynn Merrill, 61, passed away on July 13, 2024.

Susan was born to Billie Faye and Burvel Lynn Robinson on October 30, 1962 in Jasper, Alabama. She passed away in the family home where she had been living for 25 years.

Susan Merrill held many roles in her active and impactful life. She garnered numerous accolades and recognitions in both her personal life and professional career. The gift she valued the most, to which all others paled in comparison, were sweet little kisses from her beloved grandson, Ezra Merrill.

Despite a valiant, exhaustive battle against cancer, the thought of wrestling on the floor with Ezra always invigorated Susan with continued enthusiasm and strength.  Susan was a dedicated, compassionate nurse.  Susan's 39 year career was more than an occupation, it was her calling in life to assist, comfort, and help those in need whether it be inside or outside the hospital.  Susan's impressive resume includes her assistance in founding the Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit and pioneering HIV/AIDS research at the 1917 Clinic at UAB. Susan also worked in multiple psychiatric facilities for almost 20 years.  Susan's empathy, patience, and consistent advocacy for her patients' health, safety, and dignity shone brightly as a paragon of altruism.  Her connections with her patients were palpable, and her skill consummate.

Left to cherish Susan's memory include her wife, Dr. Katherine W. Merrill; son, Mark L. Merrill; grandson, Ezra R. Merrill; mother, Billie F. Robinson; sister, Donna K. Key; nephews, Derrick J. and Jamie L. Kizzire, brother-in-law, Billy H. Kizzire, and very special friends, Steve Stewart, Lee Wheeler and her "Ride or Die" Karle Wiggins.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Wilson Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory Chapel from 6:00-7:00pm. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 7:00pm.  In lieu of flowers, Susan's family asks for donations to be made to the ASPCA or the Greater Birmingham Humane Society in Susan's honor.
