Shirley Wanda Irby Hinkle, a cherished member of the Glen Allen Community in Eldridge, Alabama, departed this life on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the age of 86. Mrs. Hinkle was surrounded by her loving family at her residence and in the compassionate care of Alabama Hospice.

Born on May 11, 1939, in Ranger, Texas, Shirley was the daughter of the late John Jepthy Irby and Ethel Rose Mathis Irby. A devout member of the Eldridge Church of Christ, she was a woman of faith and fellowship. Shirley's academic journey included a diploma from Borger Texas High School, a certification in Food & Nutrition from Oklahoma, and a degree in Respite Care and home health aide from Itawamba Community College.

Throughout her life, Shirley embraced various vocations, from serving as a "Car Hop" to positions in waitressing, hospital food services, and factory work. However, her dedication to respite care left a lasting impact on numerous lives across various states. She was the wife of a preacher for 38 years and she stood steadfast beside her beloved spouse, Les Hinkle, until his passing in 2024, marking 59 years of unwavering partnership. Shirley's zest for life was evident in her love for jewelry, yard sales, music, and dance. Her warm spirit and open heart ensured that she never met a stranger.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her children: Patricia Gardner Bales (Kelly) of McLoud, Oklahoma; Richard Gardner of Winfield, Alabama; Vickey Hinkle Morris of Davenport, Iowa; Brad Hinkle (Ruth) of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and Terri Hinkle Porch (Jerry) of Eldridge, Alabama. She is also survived by her brother, Johnny Irby (Vicki) of Borger, Texas; brother-in-law, Jerry Hinkle; special niece, Tricia Iverson of Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Preceding her in death are her parents, John and Ethel Irby; her husband, Les Hinkle; siblings, Roy Irby and Jo Irby Gentry; and granddaughter, Jessica Gardner.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Eldridge Church of Christ on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. There will not be a viewing, however the family invites all to join them for fellowship and a meal following the service at the church. In remembrance of Shirley's life, the family requests charitable donations be made to The Friends with Food ministry at Eldridge Church of Christ in lieu of floral tributes.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Alabama Hospice team, including Beth, Amanda, Penny, Ashley, Chad, and Kelsie, for their unwavering support. A special acknowledgment is given to Mike and McKenzie for their extraordinary compassion and care, as well as to Sandra, Betty, Tammy, Jaquana, and Brooke for their kindness and company.

The family is profoundly grateful for the prayers, nourishment, and love bestowed upon them during this time of sorrow. Your kindness will always be remembered by the family of Shirley Hinkle.
