Merlene Johnsey

Merlene Johnsey, born April 5, 1942, passed away peacefully, made whole and now resting in the arms of her loving Savior. In the weeks before her passing, she shared that she was ready to see Jesus—a comfort that brought peace to those who loved her.

Gospel music was one of Merlene’s greatest loves. In her final moments on this earth, it was the sound that calmed her spirit and carried her home.

She is preceded in death by many beloved family members and friends, including our “Big Bear Papaw,” Bobby Johnsey, and her daughter, Connie Mahaffey. Today, we find comfort in knowing they are joyfully reunited in Heaven.

Merlene is survived by her children, Diedre Cooper and Michael Parten, along with her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry her love forward.

Merlene had a true gift for gardening. Her flowers were always vibrant and immaculate—it came naturally to her, as she truly had a green thumb. You could always tell the places she had touched, as they were filled with beauty and life. Her gardens were often visited by birds, something she deeply loved. It felt as though she created those spaces so she could enjoy the two things she cherished most—bright, blooming flowers and the gentle presence of birds—all in one peaceful place.

Now, every garden we see and every brightly colored bird that crosses our path will remind us of her.

Rest in Heaven, Merlene. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral services for Merlene will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 beginning at 2:00pm at Wilson Funeral Home and On-Site Crematory, Carbon Hill. Visitation will be held the hour before the service, from 1:00pm-2:00pm.
