Born July 12, 1938, in a two room shack on the farm of Grandfather Jack Puckett. No water or
electricity. The son of Fred Warren and Grace Puckett Beason, they lived in Chicago, Ill, Steele,
Al, Decatur, Al. and Birmingham, Al. by age 5. His parents bought 40-acre farm 2 miles from
where he was born in 1943 and he grew up there.
He leaves behind wife Dorothy (Dot) of 54 Years, daughters Courtney Charlton, Kristi Sargent (
Glenn); Grandchildren Trace Burgett(Courtney) Cameron Burgett, Ashley McMath (Anthony),
Chase Charlton (Rachael), Aubrey Charlton, Brody Sargent (Hannah), Dawson Sargent, Kayla
Sargent Morrow (Tyler), Blake Sargent (Leigha); Great grandchildren Josh Day, Alena Day, Rylee
McMath, Eleanor McMath, Jaxon McMath, Warren Burgett and Lily Sargent. Sister Ann
Townsend, brothers David Beason (Donna) and Jeff Beason (Vallie) and many nieces, nephews
and cousins.
He attended Springville School for 12 years, graduating in 1956. He was president of Senior
class, President of Student Council, and voted most popular and best-looking boy in Senior
class.
He played basketball 7 th -9 th grade on Jr High and B teams. Played on varsity team as a
Sophomore, Jr. and Sr. Springville won County Tournament all 3 years. The 1955 team went 21-
3, beating Hewitt, Emma Sansom and Gadsden twice each. Won 3 rd place in District
tournament, losing semi-final game by 1 point in overtime. He was selected to all-county team
as senior. He once scored 33 points in a game, and in another game grabbed 16 rebounds.
Following graduation, he enrolled in Auburn University, graduating in 1960. At Auburn he was
in Naval ROTC and received a Commission as officer upon graduation. He reported aboard the
USS Merrick in Sept 1960, and served as Boat Group Commander until leaving the Navy in
Sept,.1962. During his time on the Merrick, he visited Perl Harbor, Japan, Hong Kong, Okinawa,
the Philippines, and other Pacific locations.
He started a career with State Farm Insurance in Jasper, Al. in 1963, as a claims adjuster, and
over the years was promoted to Claims Supt, a position he held upon retirement in 1999, He
and then traveled over the United States and Canada for several years. Some of favorite
locations were Branson, Mo., Jackson Hole, Wy, and Tombstone, Az.
He and Dot were married in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in June 1972, and remained members
until present, except from 1988-1992, when they lived in Madison, Al. Both were active at Mt
Vernon, teaching youth Sunday School classes and serving on committees. Jim served as fund-
raising chairman for Family Life Center and Educational buildings.
They both were active in Smith Lake Civic Association, with Jim serving as president several
times. He also served as president of Curry Lions Club while it was active.
Jim lived a full and complete life, with close family ties and many friends. He is now in a better
world.
